Chartered by Bay Mills Indian Community in 1984, BMCC is one of three tribally controlled colleges in the State of Michigan and the only community college in Michigan’s Eastern Upper Peninsula.
Control is vested in a Board of Regents, which elects the officers of the Board and establishes overall institutional policy.
Bay Mills Community College is located within the boundaries of Bay Mills Indian Community in the heart of Ojibwe country. BMCC works to share the Anishinaabe Culture by integrating Native American content in all of our classes. Students can choose from a variety of native studies courses, which include native history, tribal government, seasonal lifeways, drumming, native craftworks, and much more! BMCC also provides Anishinaabe Language Immersion classes taught by first-generation speakers. Throughout the school year, cultural workshops, feasts, and many special events are offered to give students exposure to the Anishinaabe culture.
Higher Learning Commission
BMCC is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). Accreditation is an evaluation process by the accrediting body that maintains standards of educational quality by reviewing and approving our institution, staff, programs, and courses. Having a degree from an accredited institution is important for eligibility of federal financial aid, transferability of credits to another school, and allows you to obtain appropriate professional licensure in your field.
NC-SARA
Bay Mills Community College participates in the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (NC- SARA). NC-SARA is a voluntary, regional approach to state oversight of postsecondary distance education.
BMCC, as a SARA approved institution, can deliver online programs to residents in any SARA member state without seeking additional authorization from that particular state. SARA is a voluntary agreement among 49 member states, districts, and territories that establish comparable national standards for interstate offering of postsecondary distance education courses and programs.
BMCC offers a variety of degree programs and certificates from a Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education to a Certificate of Completion in Corrections. For a full list of our degree program offerings and details, see Program Descriptions.
We offer a majority of our programs fully online as well. BMCC has been a leader in online learning since Fall of 1998. That’s over 20 years of experience!
We have anywhere from 60-100 course offerings available on campus and fully online each semester. Our courses are run on 15 week semesters (Fall, Spring, Summer).
We want the best when it comes to your educational journey. Our faculty, adjuncts, and staff are highly credentialed and experts in their fields of study; Over 60% of our faculty hold doctoral or master's degrees.
At BMCC, you will have an advisor that will be assigned to you as soon as you apply. They will help you select the right courses to meet your educational goals. The advisor will also help you complete the registration process and check-in periodically to make sure you are successful. We also have academic program advisors! Once you have selected a program of study and completed your basic courses, you will start meeting with your program advisor to make sure you are on the right track and that you select and take courses that fit into your career plans for the future.
BMCC was ranked #3 by College Stats.org as one of the most affordable colleges in Michigan. We are committed to maintaining a reasonable tuition rate; at $95.00/credit for 100- and 200-level courses and $285.00/credit for 300- and 400-level courses, a high-quality education is within reach for everyone.

BMCC’s mascot is the Fighting Pike “Gilly Ginoozhe!" Gilly was named by Kalvin Hartwig, a former BMCC student, as part of the “Name the Pike” contest held in 2019. Gilly was chosen because it is a fun play on words because it’s a bit fish-like and it can be gender-neutral. Ginoozhe was chosen because it is the anishinaabe word for pike, which relates to the Bay Mills Indian Community. Bay Mills, where BMCC is located, is called Ginoozhekaaning (Place of the Pike or the Place where the pike are plentiful).
