The Associate of Arts in Liberal Arts is a two-year degree program with 62 – 67 credit hours required. The Michigan Transfer Agreement must be met to earn this degree. Students must also complete at least 9 approved elective credits in one concentration area. This degree provides a strong foundation of general education requirements in preparation for transfer.

The Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA) has been created in an effort to increase the transferability of core college courses between community colleges and four-year colleges and universities in Michigan. Originally called the Michigan Association of Collegiate Registrars & Admissions Officers (MACRAO) Agreement, the MTA was implemented in the fall of 2014. To fulfill the Michigan Transfer Agreement, students must successfully complete at least 30 credits of coursework in six defined areas with at least a grade of 2.0 in each course.

More information on the MTA can be found here: https://www.macrao.org/

Minimum MTA requirements are as follows:

  • One course in English Composition
  • A second course in English Composition or one course in Communications
  • Two courses in Social Sciences (from two disciplines)
  • Two courses in Humanities and Fine Arts (from two disciplines excluding studio and performance classes)
  • Two courses in Natural Sciences including one with laboratory experience (from two disciplines)
  • One course in Mathematics that should be satisfied by an entry-level college course

“I would highly recommend Bay Mills Community College to anyone looking to further their education. My time at BMCC pursuing my Associate's degree was a dynamic and engaging experience. As a first-generation college student, I truly appreciated the one-on-one attention I received. In and out of the classroom, the knowledgeable instructors and support staff were nothing short of amazing. I also had access to services that helped me gain the study skills I needed to succeed in the classroom and beyond. I worked closely with my Advisor, TRIO coach, and the Academics department to stay on track with my degree plan the entire time I was there. This helped by ensuring almost all of the classes I took transferred to the university. BMCC was a great place to build a solid educational foundation to help prepare me for my next step as a transfer student at Lake Superior State University. As I pursue a career as a Registered Nurse, my BMCC experience will surely contribute to my future success in the medical field.”
